trouble installing Gettext

I am on the 2.2.26 linux kernel (Deli Linux) with updated Gcc, emacs, libiconv, bison, expat, fontconfig, png, tiff, and jpeg libs.

When installing gettext, it hangs during configure with a message: checking for where to put .elc files

No error message or anything.
Just sits there waiting (or searching).

Any suggestions as to what I might be missing?
I need to get this figured out so I can install the latest gtk/glib/atk (and ultimately, gaim - which insists on it lol).

Thanks in adv.
