Question trouble instaling java

I am having trouble. In my etc/apt/sources.list I have;
deb http;//debian.oregonstate.edu/debian/stable main.
But i need to have deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/stable main contrib.
dose this make a difference?
when I try to install (apt-get or aptitude) install java-package, I receive a message could not locate???
how do I change sources.list, or what am I doing wrong???

open up the /etc/apt/sources.list as root in a text editor. If you are using gnome, use gedit, if you are using kde, use kwrite or kedit. Change the line beginning with 'deb' so it reads like this:

deb http://debian.oregonstate.edu/debian/stable main contrib non-free

save the file and then do apt-get update. You should then be able to get java-package.

OK lodged in as root ctrl-alt-f1, cd /etc/apt/sources.list, gedit. (gedit:27389):Gtk-warning **: cannot open display
(I am using gnome) (debian 1.3 sarge)
what about nano, or vim?
I can get both of them to load in /etc/apt# but,
in nano I can change the line, but it asks for a file name to save???
and I cant figure out how to change any thing or even escape, in vim???
am I on the wrong track all that I am trying to accomplish is to install the newest stable version of java.
thanks for the reply, its nice to see some help.

Open a terminal instead, then type "su". You will be prompted by the root password. Then, follow petespin27 instructions. It should work...

The simplest way to open a file as root is to open Konqueror as root, in a terminal use su or gksu konqueror, or in KDE kdesu konqueror.

Navigate to /etc/apt/sources.list right click the file and choose to open with whatever text editor you use.

Konqueror worked perfectly. I was able to change the line and save it. Would I ever need to change it back? Now I am trying to find specs for my monitor and video card. Mag innovision 720v2 monitor, and trident 3d image 9850 video card.
thanks for all the help.
