trouble compiling xmms mp4 plugin from source: "no such file.."

i'm trying to install a faad2 and mp4/aac plugin for xmms - i've extracted the files to /usr/local/src, but following the readme instructions is leading nowhere - when i run ./configure it says no such file or directory, but i see the configure.in file!!
the tutorial here on compiling makes it look simple -- so how do i know whats going wrong?

I think there is a file called
bootstrap
in the directory. Run that one first with
./bootstrap

(sorry if this is not the problem. I vaguely remember that there was a bootstrap file that needed to be executed before compiling that plugin)

i downloaded the plugin again - and this time bootstrap ran. but i got an error saying xmms-config not found, which i learnt is because i installed xmms from rpm and not source. so i downloaded and installed xmms-devel which includes the config file -- and it works!!
