Trouble compiling kernel, mkinitrd step

Hi all.

Im compiling the 2.6.10 kernel for Fedora Core 3, I need the SCSI ahci driver to get my harddrive working properly. When I try to create the initrd file, I get a failure:

[root@localhost linux-2.6.10]# cp ./arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10
cp: overwrite `/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10'? y
[root@localhost linux-2.6.10]# cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.10
cp: overwrite `/boot/System.map-2.6.10'? y
[root@localhost linux-2.6.10]# mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.10.img 2.6.10
No module ahci found for kernel 2.6.10, aborting.

The thing is, I have made it so that the ahci stuff should be compiled directly into the kernel, the question is why is it looking for a module?

any help would be greatly appreciated...

if you compiled it into the kernel then no need for initrd

well, there are other modules that will probably be loaded -- in any case, I recompiled with the ahci as a module, when it gets inserted there is an "unknown symbols" error -- does that mean there is a bug in the code? Any suggestions on how to fix?

thanx

unknown symbols error means something needed by the module is missing in the kernel
this seems to be happening with third party modules that just need fixing
but with something that's included with the kernel i think some of its support is missing
just off hand (i don't have an ata drive) so beware of faulty info
you need
IDE/ATA-2 disk (ide-disk) from the group above SCSI support
SCSI disk support (sd_mod)

either to be compiled in or get loaded before the low level ata driver in initrd
