Triple Booting - Win2k, Win98 & Mandrake 8
 

Dear all

At present, I have the following setup:

IDE0 (10GB): - MASTER

WIN98 on C:\ (PRIMARY PARTITION) and WIN2K on a LOGICAL DRIVE - NTFS (G:\) running as a dual OS with Win2k bootloader menu. On this drive, I have 2.5GB of free space left.

IDE1 (6.5GB): - SLAVE

FAT32 archive drive and Win2k apps.

Now, i wish to install Mandrake 8.0 on IDE0 (the 2.5GB freespace)
AND use the WIN2K bootloader menu NOT LILO !! can someone plz advise on how I should setup the Bootloader options during the mandrake setup process as ive got this wrong many times :(

If somebody feels that installing it on the SLAVE is easier then plz advise. But ultimately I want to be able to use the WIN2K bootmenu.

well, don't install lilo or grub onto the MBR.. install it on a floppy and from there, you should be able to configure mandrake to boot from the win2k boot loader..

With fear and trembling as a newbie I shall nonetheless risk getting thrown out my first day on this list by recommending a commercial product. First, I rather suspect that if you want the windows loader screen to be the first thing that you see when you turn on your machine, I strongly suspect that that you're SOL. MS products don't like to share. By design. Off soapbox, on to the suggestion. Go to www.blueskyinnovations.com and give them $25 for powerboot. It'll be the first thing you see when you boot up, but it'll lie to everything as necessary and let you boot to anything no matter where it's physically located. I've got Win98, Red Hat 7.2 and (believe it or not) OS/2 warp 4 living together happily. The OS/2 boot manager thinks it's in charge when I "boot" to it; I used the Red Hat option to install Grub in the /boot partion and Windows is none the wiser. Good Luck.

Like he says, don't load anything into your MBR. Make your way in your 2K install to C:\boot (it's normally a hiddenfile) edit it to reflect the path to your Linux install. As an aside I would have reccommended 2K installed as primary.
