Trickle bandwidth shaper

Hi guys, I have a few questions about Trickle bandwidth shaper at http://monkey.org/~marius/pages/?page=trickle

Is this tool the best bandwidth shaper for Linux? It's feature set is all I need and it's basic/simple enough for me. I don't need it to do anything complex and am very happy with it, just curious if it's the best.

Second, what are the possible use cases for a bandwidth limiter. I've only ever used Trickle for wget, torrent, ftp and firefox. What other apps do you limit using Trickle or any other bandwidth shaper?

That's it

TIA

I don't know if it's the best solution, I'd say not for servers.
But in order to test something with a lower connection-speed I think it's a good and easy solution.
Some time ago I used to use it to test websites I developed at lower speeds, to see if load-times are bearable for users with slower connections.
For stuff like this it's good, but anything beyond may need something more complex.

The standard traffic shaper in Linux is tc. The advantage is that you don't have to install anything, it is part of the kernel. The disadvantage is that it reuires about 3 weeks of careful study before you are able to configure your own shaper, provided you already have a solid background in networking and iptables.

If trickle works for you, keep it. For more sophisticated shaping, like a group based policies for a network etc. you might have to use tc
