Transmitting data over IRDA port

Hi experts,

my motherboard (or here) has an IRDA port. No IRDA device is connected there. Instead, I'd like to utilize it as a serial port to communicate with a device I still have to build.

Can I simply "echo 123456 > /dev/irda0" or something similar?
How can I get an answer from the IRDA port?

Not much help but the IrCOMM protocol implements serial port emulation. I do not have any experience with irda devices but serial port communications do not work very well with bash. I would probably use c. The device ID will be /dev/ircomm0.
