Transmission: Downloaded files not visible

Hi everyone!
Sorry for my english, I hope I'll explane me as well as possible....

I've a problem with some downloaded files with Transmission.
I use Transmission for downloading torrent files since I have installed Hardy Heron.
Everything was ok.
Last week I downloaded 25 GiB of files (dance videos, music and so on....) in my external hd.
On sunday I try to move some of them in a dvd.
As always I open Brasero and I search for them in my external hd: nothing.
They don't exist in the destination folder, the same in 2 years with ubuntu, that I called "incoming Transmission".

So, I made some checkes:
First:
- in Transmission -> right click on one of the downloaded, bright green and "invisible" file -> details -> informations -> position -> /media/hdext/incoming Transmission

Second:
- in pc Resources -> search file -> name of the same file inside /media/hdext/incoming Transmission...... Here it is!!!

Third:
- in the folder tree I mark "view hidden files": nothing! they're invisible!!!

If I open directly the destination folder I can't see them!!!
In these days I continue to download other files, and everything goes on right....

I'm a little bit desperate!!!!

The problem is caused by space(s) in the directory name causing the shell to split it into multiple words. That's why you get

bash: cd: /media/Leru: Nessun file o directory

The shell passes /medi/Leru to the cd command, not '/media/Leru Leru'.

The solution is to quote file and directory paths that include spaces

Code:

cd '/media/Leru Leru/incoming transmission/'

Alternatively, depending on bash being configured for "pathname expansion", you could type cd /media/L and then press tab. With luck bash will display cd /media/Leru\ Leru/ (the \ tells the shell not to treat the following space as a word separator) and then type inc and press tab

In this list there are ALL the downloaded files: some of them are in bright green characters, other are blue with green highlight, the 3 with the I/O errors are violet.

But if I catch the image of the same folder (with option "see hidden files" marked)... see the attachment.... you'll see only 28 files...

OK, a) the GUI file browser is not showing all the files that the command line listing shows and b) the command line listing shows some files with I/O errors.

Perhaps the GUI file browser doesn't handle the I/O errors sanely and gives up listing the other files. You could investigate by moving the files with I/O errors to a subdirectory and then see if the GUI file browser then displays the first directory contents correctly and how it displays the subdirectory.

These commands would move the files with I/O errors to a subdirectory

Chances are you have some file system corruption. First thing to do if you haven't already is to back up all the files on the file system. Then run fsck on the file system. To help further with this it will be helpful to have the output from the df command.

Yesterday I have to copy some "invisible" files for my teacher...
She borrow me her laptop with Xp.... everything was ok: the external HD was detected and I saw all the files and I copy them in a dvd....

I have only to run fsck....

Does that mean you were able to copy the files with I/O errors? It would be surprising.

Let us know how it goes with fsck. If you are lucky the problem files will turn up in the lost+found directory of the file system including /media, under different names.

File system corruption may indicate failing hardware ... do you have any way of testing the hard disk, for example the smartmontools package with smartd and smartctl?
