Totem(Media Player) -Modifications

I was going to do some modifications in the existing TOTEM player
so i searched for its documentation in google but failed to get a proper one.
Can anyone help me out here.

Its my first project so i would also like to know what all things should i keep in mind before starting.

I am not able to understand the code.So what should i do? Failed to get documentation for a developer
