Totem and XMMS

Why does Totem "lock up"? It will be running along streaming great and then "buffer" and sometimes it'll "lock-up". Can't close or anything short of reboot. So I tried XMMS for radio streams and it worked good except all I can get is "mono". It scratches just like an FM car radio when the signal is weak and it tries to come in stereo. Also it won't go to a URL when entered.
