Totem and DVD's
 

I'm using Suse 9.0 and am trying to use Totem to watch DVDs. When I try to play them all I get is:
Totem could not play 'dvd:/'
Reason: This movie cannot be opened.

I've mounted the DVD drive, anyone know what's wrong? And how I might fix it?
Prefrences show my creative DVD-ROM DVD1241E drive, which looks correct.
It's version .99.2

I have searched around, read the howto section and all.

as far as i know totem doesn't come with a dvd decoder(legal issues). how to set it up with a decoder lib like libdvdcss2 i don't know. u could get several dvd players that will decode like mplayer, xine, and videolan, to name a few. they would let u decode by including the aforementioned lib. good luck.

Why can't vendors of linux provide decoders? I mean, they don't have to release the de-cryption key to everyone.

I use mplayer to watch my dvds. Everything works fine, so you may want to go down that route.

Because DVD licensing is regional, meaning you can't buy a DVD in, say, Europe and play it in America. Since Linux is a world-wide phenomenon, this creates a problem.

quit moping dr. d. learning to work with linux will require a little effort. go to http;//xine.sf.net, there u will find instructions on d/loading and installing xine. or www.videolan.org for vlc. personally i use xine for my dvds installation is easy and watch for dependencies. the dvd decoder lib is libdvdcss u will need it.

I already tried libdvdcss. Anyhow, nothing changed. I didn't think it was related to my decoder.

What's up with the strange phenominon when somebody mentions something they'd like to see improved, and get rude flames in return? It's like some of you are paranoid that some aspects of the linux world might actually not be perfect. Quit moping Dr. D? I know as well as any of you that getting things to work under linux takes quite a bit of time sometimes.

DrD, is there a symbolic link in /dev/ called DVD? Probably is, but as for Totem, it worked for me. I think it might have something to do with the /dev's not Totem. Just a shot in the dark though.

sorry drd didn't mean to start a flame war. can't help with totem, i uninstalled it from my box totally and simply tried to make u aware of alternatives that work well.
