total newb question..you all hate me already

Alright here goes....

i am installing mandrake 9.1 dual boot with windows.

i have them each on separate HD's.

after installation i get to lilo and pick linux. it goes through a serious of screens loading everything up....then i get to a command prompt. i thought i had it configured to load to a GUI instantly but it wont. i log in and still can't get a GUI. i don't know if i just configured it wrong (very likely) or my videocard/monitor (ati 9800/KDS xflat 19inch) doesn't agree with it. i've tried startx but it gives me an error. i installed it with the KDE GUI.

any help is appreciated....thanks a lot.

PS - i am doing this basically all alone. i have yet to find a good step by step walk-through and setup instructions or any good commands. maybe i'm just lazy but could someone point me that way so i dont have to bother you guys with these annoying questions!!

xf86config

I have the same thing, but I'm sorry, I haven't gotten around to try the new Ati drivers ...

what you can do in xf86config is select the generic vesa drivers (or just edit in you XF86Config file)

at least you'll have X ...

I know how you feel, I have the exact same problem. Every forum I have been to hasn't given me any sucess. I'm a total newb with this stuff and people tell me things like I'm supposed to know how to do it and then get mad at me when I get all confused. It would be real nice if somebody could point me to or tell me a very detailed step by step guide on how to configure these things to get X to start. I'm starting to get pretty frustrated, I really want to try out Linux.

"no screens found" may actually be a problem with your monitor rather than the video card.
When you ran xf86config, did you set it up with the proper monitor and refresh rates? If it's set to something the monitor can't handle X will screw up.

I would give the installation tips a read.

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/readme0328.txt

You'll soon find you don't need a gui to install anything.
