Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

i am installing mandrake 9.1 dual boot with windows.
i have them each on separate HD's.
after installation i get to lilo and pick linux. it goes through a serious of screens loading everything up....then i get to a command prompt. i thought i had it configured to load to a GUI instantly but it wont. i log in and still can't get a GUI. i don't know if i just configured it wrong (very likely) or my videocard/monitor (ati 9800/KDS xflat 19inch) doesn't agree with it. i've tried startx but it gives me an error. i installed it with the KDE GUI.
any help is appreciated....thanks a lot.
PS - i am doing this basically all alone. i have yet to find a good step by step walk-through and setup instructions or any good commands. maybe i'm just lazy but could someone point me that way so i dont have to bother you guys with these annoying questions!!
it is (WW) radeon: no matching device section for instance
(EE) no device detected
fatal server errors:no screens found
i think i have my display driver setup wrong....how would i go about changing it or getting the correct updated driver. i know there is a command to browse the internet through consol but i forgot it. its been so long and what little i knew has dissapeared!
can anyone point me to a guide or tell me a book that will help me out with this linux install....its all my damn new hardware thats making this difficult. i have a sata HD and a new videocard that really seem to dislike linux, and its driving me up the wall. anyone help me! i downloaded mandrake 9.2 rc2 last night and i will try it out today. there may be a chance that it solves all my problems but if not i will be back here hagglin you fellas.
I know how you feel, I have the exact same problem. Every forum I have been to hasn't given me any sucess. I'm a total newb with this stuff and people tell me things like I'm supposed to know how to do it and then get mad at me when I get all confused. It would be real nice if somebody could point me to or tell me a very detailed step by step guide on how to configure these things to get X to start. I'm starting to get pretty frustrated, I really want to try out Linux.
"no screens found" may actually be a problem with your monitor rather than the video card.
When you ran xf86config, did you set it up with the proper monitor and refresh rates? If it's set to something the monitor can't handle X will screw up.
