Total lost?

Hi all,
I recently downloaded and installed apt... Probably did not read into it enough as to what the hell I was actually doing, but hey. I done a apt-get -f install and was under the impression that this was not going to help me with a problem install, instead this:

apt-get -f install

Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Correcting dependencies... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
autoconf2.5 automake1.7 firstboot gcc gcc-c++ gcc-g77 gcc-gnat gcc-java gcc-objc glibc-devel kernel-source#2.4.18-14
rhn-applet rpmtools up2date up2date-gnome xmms xmms-crossfade xmms-itouch xmms-skins
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 19 removed and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 199MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
Executing RPM (-e)...
warning: /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date-uuid saved as /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date-uuid.rpmsave
warning: /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date saved as /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date.rpmsave
warning: /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-applet saved as /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-applet.rpmsave
install-info: warning: no entries found for `/usr/share/info/automake1.7.info.bz2'; nothing deleted

The programs were removed ? ? ? ?

Doh!

I now cant play xmms ( as it no longer exists ) What did I do ( apart from the obvious ) and where can I find good tutorials or even decent man pages ( the info I have found has been short and basic ) your help would be much appreciated....

Thanks in advance...

apt-get install xmms should re-install xmms.

Debian Package Management HOWTO Version 1.1

apt-get install <package> is the basic syntax.

If you need a gui pointy-clicky thingy, try

apt-get install synaptic.

I would suggest running these:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Did you do apt-get update first (to get the package list)?
