toshiba satellite unable to boot ubuntu 7.04 live cd

ok my friend just gave me his dads old laptop and the only thing wrong with it is that windows is broken (doesn't this happen alot?). so i really would like another linux laptop because this one has a 2.8 GHs processor instead of a 1.6 GHs one. but ok down to the problem.

Every time i try to install it i get the same screen or a blank screen

the says:

sorry now a new problem just happened with my new laptop. now it won't turn on at all
but when i get that fixed i'll post the rest of the screen that it shows

P.S. any suggestions on how to fix this laptop would be nice. all that it is is that its power button isn't working i can still find evidence that the bios is still intact so i'm pretty sure that means that i can get it to work again
