tor listener ports

Until recently tor/vidalia ran easily on opensuse 11.3. An upgrade to 12.1 broke it. Now I get the error message 'failed to bind to listener port'. Configuration is the same as before on firewall and router. Am using latest browser bundle download. What am I doing wrong?

Depends if the previous log line is "Address already in use". Check your TOR log file. If TOR doesn't log much set it to debug logging in torrc first, run 'lsof -i tcp:9050' or 'fuser -vn tcp 9050' as root to check if another instance is listening and then restart it and check the log file.

The vidalia error message is that the server has not managed to verify that orport is reachable. torrc (in this version) does not offer a debug mode. Also the ports assigned by vidalia are 9001 and 9030.. am changing modes so that both ports willo be checked.

The 2 commands given - not run in debug mode but as root - gave no response.

What version would that be then? AFAIK any recent TOR version supports setting
Code:
Log debug file /var/log/tor/debug.log

You need to substitute the default 9050 OR port for what your configuration uses.

Was not aware of /var/log/tor. It's empty anyway. Debug will not run for root from within tor. The 2 commands you gave earlier yield:

orca:/var/log/tor # fuser -vn tcp 9001
USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
9001/tcp: mlmack 31601 F.... tor

orca:/var/log/tor # lsof -i tcp:9030
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
tor 31601 mlmack 7u IPv4 1077911776 0t0 TCP *:9030 (LISTEN)

Ran both commands for each port - dirport and orport.

The only torrc I* can find came bundled in the download: tor, vidalia, and firefox.
