To compile X from source or not?
I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to compile Xfree86-4 from source or not.
I'm running a Debian system as a desktop workstation, and will be using X constantly so I'd really like to have the optimizations for my P4.
The problem is dependancies - I'm not sure what packages I need to build X, nor how to convince Debian (and apt) that I have an X server installed once I build it.
Has anyone self-compiled XFree86-4 for a P4, and if so have you noticed a significant speed increase? Or would I be adding a lot of hassle for little gain?
Any help with the dependancy issues is greatly appreciated, but mainly I'm after speed and benchmark opinions between stock and optimized X - that's why this is in Software and not Debian.
