tiny fonts after loading ATI Catalyst 9.11 Proprietary in Suse 11.2

Hi,
With a 30 inch monitor, videos at full screen had large chunks of black horizontal stripes covering 1/3 of the screen. At window size (not full screen) they look fine so the scaling seems to be the problem.

I loaded the newest ATI video driver. Now all of my system fonts are 1/4 their previous size, but the video is fixed.

I am trying to find the system font size and can't find anything. At "configure desktop", there is a font installer, but it just shows the existing fonts with an add/delete option. How do I change the default font? My shell prompt is ~4 pixels tall and totally unreadable.

Thank you,
BrianP

But Wait...
Under system_settings -> advanced, there appears to be nothing about fonts except adding and removing. Switching to the general tab, under look & feel there is an appearance icon. Isn't it standard to find all general features in advanced only with more options?

Under fonts, there is font_settings. I changed them all from 10 to 15 and they are readable. Hitting apply, many windows on my desktop have been updated.

However, on my bash shell, the fonts are still 4 pixels tall. With glasses and a magnifying glass, I can see that each character is composed of about 8 pixels. Totally unreadable.

All of the controls in Firefox are also microscopic. Thunderbird is the same.

My task bar icons have the same tiny writing and they have also gone transparent making them even more difficult to read.

How do you turn off transparency in the system tray and task bar?

Is there an ATI catalyst GUI for Linux like there is in windoz?

Thank you,

BrianP
