Thunderbird settings aren't retained

I'm using TBird 3.0.4 on a Slack 12.2 box. Whenever I customize TBird- height, width, folder view, whatever- the settings aren't being written to the localstore.rdf file. When I close and reopen, everything is set just like it was before any configuration changes. Permisssions don't appear to be an issue. Anyone have any ideas?

Not a slack user: But what happens if you delete your profile (or move it to a backup location) and then work with a new profile? If there is something wrong with the profile itself, this is the fastest way to tell.

Thanks for the reply! Not to anticipate you but I had been thinking about something down that line. Also, thanks for the heads up (and link) for the TBird forum- I didn't know there was one.
