THUNDERBIRD / local smtp server issue

i am running a local smtp server. using mail i can reply to msgs sent to me. i have thunderbird setup and i can receive msgs but i cannot reply or send through thunderbird. is their something i need to change in my exim4 settings? in thunderbird i have tried setting my smtp server to localhost and also to 127.0.0.1, it gives me an error with these two settings. when i set it to my ip it says that relaying is not allowed. im at a loss on what to do....

thanks in advance

I don't know exim (just sendmail) but you probably need to enable 'relaying' or 'relay' for localhost or 127.0.0.1

Probably you can enable 'allow, relay, deny' for subnets look for this in your documentation or on the web.

regards,
