Thunderbird... installed sort of

I sort of have Thunderbird installed, I don't know how but I have managed to get it to come up. I want to add an icon for it on my desktop.

How do I do that?

Thunderbird also doesn't show up in my program list but I can find the files then extract all the files and it runs.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

You can right click on the SuSE menu and edit the menu and add it manually if you have it installed and you can get the program to run, then put it on your desktop.

Firefox and Thunderbird 1.5 don't have to be installed to run on Linux (well, the newer distros anyway) - all you do is unzip the downloaded file and run the executable shell script 'thunderbird' or 'firefox'. Therefore, tweakerxp, you've done everything correctly. If you want shortcuts to run either of these programs, you have to set them up yourself by linking to the shell script.

I'm not understanding.... Linking to the shell? TB doesn't show up anywhere on my desktop or in the programs list. I have to go down into the file system to find it. Then I have to start clicking on things till it comes up. When it does come up it gives me a "port 110 error" which right now I'm not worried. I want to learn how to do this tar thing for now. Installing and getting programs to run. #1 thing. Thunderbird didn't come with SuSE 10.0, at least not mine.

I am a newbie so I don't know if I can help, but here is what I did to get thunderbird in my program list.

I have KDE.

!. Go to the bottom left of your screen and right click on the green ball (the k menu). Then click on menu editor.

2. Click on the + next to internet and then click on email. Then go up to file and click on add item. Enter the name "thunderbird".

3. Now find the line where is says command and right next to it is a folder. Click on the folder and find the "thunderbird" file inside of your thunderbird folder and click ok.

This should work if you use KDE.

Okay, an older version of Thunderbird is shipped with SUSE 10, but it isn't necessarily installed by default. Therefore I suggest you download Thunderbird 1.5 from mozilla.org. You then extract this .tar.gz, and doubleclick the thunderbird shell script (a file called thunderbird) in the directory you extracted the download to. If you want to move this folder, you can. To run Thunderbird after that, you need to link to this shell script file. you can add this to the K Menu youself, but the program isn't actually installed as such (it won't show up in YAST) so you have to do this yourself. Hope that's clearer.

Thumbs up Try RPM...

Alternatively you could uninstall what you have and download this rpm at http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i586.rpm.html
Once you have downloaded the rpm you just right click on it select Actions> Install with Yast. that should solve your problems, it is an experimental rpm but it seems to work fine for me. Thats how I got Thunderbird.
