What kind of package is this: rpm, tar.gz or ?

When installing anything thing that will be 'system wide' or 'global' as it's also referred to you can do this logged in as root or using the sudo command or logged in as a regular user and using the su (super user) login to become root.

If you downloaded what I download, the tar.gz file (thunderbird-1.0.2.tar.gz), first you need to unpack the package (file) and then run the installer as "root".

In the case of the file I downloaded it's the application and not an actual installer. So that meant I needed to unpack the file so that it resided in the folder /usr/local

So what you would see then from a file browser like konqueror would be /usr/local/thunderbird

The application shortcut would have this for the run command:

/usr/local/thunderbird/thunderbird

And the icon for it is located in the icons directory under the thunderbird directory. Pick the 50x50 size.
