the_sims

Hi,
I bought Mandrake ages ago and it had winex sims bundled with it. I now run Slack9.1 and tried installing the sims in tgz (slackware package format) by doing rpm2tgz on the three rpms on the disk. This worked fine and I installed the 3 tgz files.
Upon running the_sims for the first time I was asked for my cd key - I gave it the cdkey, all ok. The setup finnished ok then exited; when I ran the sims again I get the message:

Quote:
tuttle@shangrila:~$ the_sims
wine: lstat /home/tuttle/.the_sims/wineserver-shangrila/socket : No such file or directory
The file /home/tuttle/.the_sims/wineserver-shangrila/socket does not exist and I don't know if it should be generated during the install or upon first run. Any help in getting this running would be much appreciated.
Karl.

Is there path looks like /home/tuttle/.the_sims/wineserver-shangrila. If not then you have to create it. Try running winex in debug mode and post the messages and your config file here. Someone with winex experience can help you further.

thanks for your reply,
All the stuff in my home folder is there (i.e./home/tuttle/.the_sims/wineserver-shangrila) including a link to ~/.the_sims/c_drive/simsdir/UserData which I remember from previous installs.
I'm not sure how to run winex on its own and in debug mode, I think it is all part of the game and not a seperate install (like the version available for download). Don't worry if you aren't familiar with this problem, if no-one has any idea then I'll uninstall and try it as a proper rpm install.

Your problem is gcc. Slack 9.1 uses a newer version than Mandrake 8.1 did - the distro they bundled the sims for Linux with. The solution is to go to transgaming.com and do 1 of 2 things.

1 - subscribe and download the patch that will sort out your problem.

2 - see if someone else has a solution on the sims forum.

They created The Sims for Linux? Holy cow! Now we're getting momentum!

Wait, this isn't just The Sims(Windows Version) that's using WineX on Mandrake 8.1, is it?
