The Ultimate - Pros and Cons

Hi all,

Im new to linux and already ive spent many many hours reading up on various distros. Im wiser, but not as much as Id like to be and I think its the same for many potential Linux users.

Ideally what Id like to do is start this post as an ultimate list of pros and cons to various linux distributions and their gui counterparts - for example Im using Fedora Core 3 at the moment with KDE - Im looking for a streamlined stable product - would Vector Linux with Fluxbox be better for this reason?

A list of the main pros and cons for each distro/gui (I think) would be a really good resource, especially added to by people that have had first hand experience of systems theyre commenting on. There doesnt appear to be anywhere that provides this (at least in full - ive seen 2 distros compared, just not one with all distros taken into account - please correct me if Im wrong).

What says you all? Might it be better to have the forum as more of a 'bullet points' setup rather than an out an out debate? That could be reserved for "The Ultimate Pros and Cons Debate"....

kde eats yoru system recourses so it can look pretty. Also in my opniion i think fedora installs a bunch of packages you dotn need. I use gentoo because everythign is compiled from source and it only installs what you tell it to, the downside to gentoo is that it takes forever to get set up and it can also be a tough job if you don't know what you are doing. if you are looking for streamlined and fast i would go with gentoo and xfce or at least gnome rather thatn kde

This thread does not belong here in my opinion. There have been many threads (some still running) with more or less the same subject as this one in the Non-*nix->General. And your thread's title is...at least odd.

Too big words for a thread title.

I see you recently joined LQ and maybe you didn't motice that there is a Review section which is pretty much what you want. If you can't find it, it is located at http://www.linuxquestions.org/reviews/index.php.

Also look here, especially the title should strike you:

Cheers,

Yeah, it is a bit of a tough title.

Thanks for those links. I also just came across:

http://justlinux.com/forum/showthrea...hreadid=137678

Although what I was more looking for was the result or opinions of gui's coupled with linux distros together. So for example would it be better to have a cut down gui if you have a heavy backend and vise versa?

I was interested in fluxbox and putting this onto Fedora, but then I wondered whether vector linux would make better use? I read something earlier today about it.

Maybe it wasnt such a good idea to have a specific forum here - or on this at all - I just thought it might be better than a straight vote system by producing users (rather than reviewers) reasoning.

Take your time and read through the Non-*nix->General forum threads. You'll see there all kind of questions and might help you sort out whatever you want to know. Or use the Search feature if you want to filter the threads...ok, I've done it for you THIS time:

Good luck!
