The Sims 3 Wine
 

Hi everyone, I am very new to Linux but I have already fallen in love with Ubuntu 10.10.
My issue is The Sims 3, My problem is that when I start the game, it goes to black and I can't get back to the desktop. In my search I found the Wine forum had 2 or 3 others with similar problems and have not gotten things working. The Sims 3 is on the gold list and in some versions of Linux it's platinum so I hold high hopes. So do any of you have some ideas for me? By the way, I am using Wine with Playonlinux and my graphics card is on the list but very low.

try using the version in wine's repository

I got Wine and Play on Linux from the package manager. Play On Linux has the option to switch from current to any other version and a 64bit version. I have tested them all. I see something in another forum, that you need a dll to make it work. Can you show me where to get it and where to save it to? Also I see someone with a similar problem that said a configuration file in the game can be altered to reduce the resolution and disable something that fails in Wine. Do you know anything about this?

run in a terminal: wine --version then post your version here.

To install a dll, just go into your wine's system32 directory (~/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/system32) and paste it.

Do not copy d3dx9_31.dll, install the whole directx 9 in wine. In the appdb, most success users were using 1.3.14. (newer version is always better)

Is that the end-user runtime?

Play On Linux asks for a prefix for Directx 9 and lists some of my Wine applications.

I don't see TS3 in the list, my guess is that this is not the full DX 9.0C installer. Do you know where I can get it?

Hi back from Scotsburn, Nova Scotia. I got DirectX installed but still having the same problem.

PlayOnLinux is a frontend for wine. Try installing the game using only wine.
By the way, this can be a problem with your VGA's model and/or driver.
At last, try registering this bug at http://bugs.winehq.org/

I'l try installing straight from Wine. Also I read that Play on Linux installs multiple versions of Wine on Ubuntu and that it also installs each application to a new API, what ever that is. I guess that is's meant to keep the applications safe from each other.

I did a search and found out that you can alter the Options.ini file to fix graphics issues I set it to windowed mode, rez at 800x600 1 and then ran it in terminal.
