Text unrecognized after Pango and Cairo updated

I recently updated my copies of Pango and Cairo up the latest versions, and now a lot of my text is unrecognized. Firefox download screens, the login screen, system prompts, all of it has blocks in place of characters. Does anyone know how I messed up in installation and how I can fix it?

For reference -

I had the same problem, but couldn't find any way to solve it, this was a thread I started maybe you'll have some better luck with some of the suggestions.

Presumably, one of the packages (Pango or Cairo) breaks something during its install/update process, or theres a bug in one the applicatioons or possibly a dependency on something else that needs updating.
