Text/sample-based music tracker(music compiler)?
 

Hello.

I'm looking for a program (CLI-based) that allows writing music (not a typesetting scores!) in a text editor, and then compiling it into *.wav(or ogg, mp3 or whatever). Music should be sample-based (MIDI is good, but instruments sound differently between different machines). i.e. I'm looking for a some kind of combination of compiler and a music tracker, with an extremely compact language - something like a cross between lilypond (text-based typesetting software) and MilkyTracker.

I'm looking for something like this because most tracker software, although fun, isn't really suitable for making polyphonic music (because it's channel based), polymetric music, using tuplets (playing triplet and quadripled at same time is possible but problematic), etc.

On other hand, lilypond (where all this is possible), allows exporting music only to midi, AFAIK doesn't have precise volume control, and uses really verbose syntax, which is more suitable to typesetting (writing "<a e c b>" for a chord is no fun).

Using software like "rosegarden", "note edit" isn't also an option, since such editors often are aimed for making printable scores and are generally relatvely slow to use (I've already did several orchestral scores in Cakewalk, Finale and Lilypond, so I think I know what I'm talking about), even with MIDI keyboard (it produces a nice boos of speed when digitilizing an existing score, though).

There are also ABC-based tools, but they (AFAIK) do not support samples, and are more suitable for exchanging tunes, not making something that sounds good.

I've checked google, but requests like "ascii tracker" or "music compiler" returns a lot of things I'm not interested in. So I haven't found something like what I'm looking for.

Does anyone know a software like what I've described or a category of such sofware (so I'll be able to find it myself), or keywords for search, or a better place to ask such question?
