Text login prompt "resolution out of bounds"

I installed a custom pci module on my RedHat 7.3 2.4.20-18smp node and when I when to remove the module my computer froze.

When I boot now (to run level 3), I can see all of the start up messages until just before it goes to the login prompt, at which point the monitor says "out of range". I thought it may just be out of range for my TFT monitor so I switched to a CRT and still the same problem.

If I "use the force" and login at the prompt I cannot see and type startx, X starts fine.

Does anyone know where the resolution for the mingetty login is set, or how it works? Or even better, does someone know how to fix it.

Further notes:
If I boot through the non-smp kernel everything works fine.
I removed the smp kernel and reinstalled and it still does not work
