TeX can't find tex.fmt

On trying to compile a program, make runs the following line:

Code:

tex --interaction batchmode usermanual.texi
and gets the following error:

Code:

This is TeX, Version 3.141592 (Web2C 7.5.3)
I can't find the format file `tex.fmt'!

I'm not sure where all the TeX files are, since I installed LaTeX manually once, and then it apparently got installed/upgraded when I upgraded Slackware.

"locate tex.fmt" gives me:

Code:

/usr/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/tex.fmt
/usr/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/pdflatex.fmt
/usr/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/latex.fmt
/usr/share/texmf/web2c/tex.fmt
/usr/share/texmf/web2c/pdflatex.fmt
/usr/share/texmf/web2c/pdftex.fmt
/usr/share/texmf/web2c/latex.fmt
