Terminal Window prompt in Mandrake 9.0

I read in Linux Format how to change the prompt when in a terminal window. However that only works for that terminal session. I would like to know which file contains the instruction which sets up the default prompt, so I can change it permanently. Anyone know?

/etc/bashrc

(probably the global one whereas you were pointing me at the user file) but I would not have known where to start without your help.
