Terminal doesn't work properly

Hello,

I recently installed Linux Mint 8 (main) on my P.C.. When I select the main menu and activate the Terminal, all that comes up is a blank white window--The same thing happens when I try to run Software Manager or Synaptic. Could you please instruct me how to fix this
problem.

Thank you for your help,

Jaguar

try starting from a live linux like 'slax' and see what you get there. www.slax.org

then report back.

If you can start a virtual terminal via Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2, F3 ...), log in there and use pstree or ps -ef to find out what is actually being run that results in the white screen and post back. Get back to the graphical screen by Ctrl+Alt+F7 (or F2, F3 ...).

Please describe the screen that you get after booting up.

Can you run any of the applications in the menus?

It would also be helpful to us if you would post your machine's hardware specs.

Just go to a virtual terminal (i.e. Ctrl-Alt-Fx where x is 1-6), type "lspci" and post the results here. If they go off the screen, then use Shift+PgUp/Dn to scroll the display.

Also, do you have any other graphical problems? Is the window completely white, or can you see a menu bar/title bar/frames/etc.? As mentioned above, it would be nice if you posted a screenshot of this.

Or type

Code:
lspci &> ~/lspci.txt
and then attach lspci.txt (which will be in your home dir) to your post.
