Terminal 7 damaged? X wont start anymore!

Hi,

when I updated my kernel 3 days ago, this seemed to have killed my X-System.

I only updated my 2.6.8.0rc2.2 to 2.6.8.1.1 on Mandrake, using the precompiled RPM for P3-64GB-SMP, and the propriate sources.
Now my system crashed (completely, only hard reset works) on every boot when KDE should start. I turned autostart KDE off, and tried to find out:

"startx" always freezes the whole system, after the line "Using vt7", the same on the log.
Alt+F7 also crashes the system immediately.

Then I manipulated my XConfig, first switched to X-integrated Nvidia-driver instead of accelerated, then removed it and rebuild it completely with drakx11. No change.
Updated XOrg to the newest version in cooker, no change. Tried to update some other packages, but found nothing usefull.

What can I try? I dont wont to reinstall my system.

Thx,
Pirf2

P.S. System Mandrake 10.0c, mostly updated.
Sorry for my bad english. :-(

Revert kernels or consider going vanilla. Mandy is loading up agpgart or something that isn't gelling with your nvidia card.

Have you tried to recompile the nvidia kernel module since upgrading the kernel?

After upgrade I recompiled my nvidia module, so this should be accurate for the new kernel.

I also tried to revert to my old kernel, but there I could not compile the nvidia-driver there, since I also updated the sources, and I think, they overwrote the old ones, wich are not in the cooker anymore.

Anyway, shouldn't I expect some more precisive error message and later in the startx-process, and no total system freeze directly after terminal change, when there is something wrong with the driver-module?
