tar "Error exit delayed from previous errors" using "-C /"

Hi everyone

I have a tar archive wich I could unpack using
tar jxvf <name.tar.bz>
but using
tar jxvf <name.tar.bz2> -C /
as root I get the error "Error exit delayed from previous errors"

Does anybody have an idea why?

Greetings

ToK

When I've seen that message, there has always been one or more error messages before to indicate what happened. I suspect you got such message(s) but it got lost in your verbose output. You might try turning off verbose output or redirecting stdout someplace else.

EDIT: You can use the d option if you want to compare the archive to what is now on your file system to find any discrepencies.

Hi blackhole54,

you are right. There is an error in the tar archive: it contains a *file* /usr/sbin which cannot be created (of course). Thanks for advice.
