tar command

I am upgrading my kernel, but i can't seem to unzip the darn thing. It is linux-2.6.1.tar.bz2.
I used the tar -zxvf command but it doesn't work.

try tar -jxvf

[ -j implies --bzip2 and -z implies --gzip or --ungzip ]
