systemwide sound troubles

I kinda have a weird problem with my sound:
when I wan to play an mp or ogg or whatever in xmms it loads the file, the play symbol appears in the main window as if it's about to play, but it doesn't, ever.
I can't think of anything that has changed in the last days, apart from the SID updates but no-one on the debian mailinglists has complained about sound toubles in the last days.
My useraccount is member of the audio group, /dev/dsp exists, support for my soundcard is built in the kernel (not as module) and has worked for a long time.
Output plugin is OSS 1.2.7 input plugins are ok too.
But it's system-wide, no multimedia can actually play files, they just stay put on 0 secs forever.
No program gives me any error messages on the xterm, so I really don't know what to check next.

I come home, turn on my pc and my sound is back, nothing has changed in the meantime.
This is by far the most weird thing I've seen on my pc, I know it's not that severe to not have sound but stil...
If someone has any idea what might have triggered this please let me know.
