system monitoring script

I recently saw a script on a gentoo system that shows system parameters on the desktop over the wallpaper. Unfortunately, I didnot note the name of the script.
It had bar graphs for cpu usage, disk usage etc.
Can someone give me the reference of any such script.
Also I am new to scripting in shell, so I would like to write a script to output things on the desktop, is that possible ? any reading or reference on that could be helpful.

By the way,how to display the output of shell scripts on the desktop? I mean integration with gnome to be specific. As conky does it.
