system hangs while booting...RH8

I installed redhat 8.0 on AMD athlon/ASUS A7N266. Initially had problem with grub .92 but after installing .93 it started booting but the system hangs at
checking root file system.

Any inputs pls...

what filesystem are you using ext2 ext3 reiserfs? this might be a kernel problem where support for the filesystem is not added in or its possible but unlikely that the data is corrupt

This could be an IRQ problem. Either turn off APIC in the Boot options in the BIOS, or add 'noapic' to the 'kernel =' line in Grub. More Grub info at the Grub Guide here:

Look at other BIOS settings here:

http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/install.html

While this info is Mandrake-specific, the info about BIOS settings under 'Before Installing' applies more generally to Linux.
