System Freezes Trying to Burn Data CD

My system freezes up and I have to reboot when I try to burn a couple of small files to a CD using K3b. However, I can burn them to a DVD with no problem. I reported this as a bug to K3b but their response wasn't helpful. They said 1) that the system didn't freeze (even though the computer didn't respond to the mouse or keyboard!), 2) the problem wasn't a K3b bug, and 3) it likely was that cdrecord was blocked by automounting (I don't know what this means). It was recommended that I disable automounting for now.

How do I disable automounting?

Is there another program that I could use instead of K3b?

Thank you!

cdrecord
burncd

look at the man page for them if you have them installed
Code:
man cdrecord
You could try Xcdroast also.

Does your CD Burner support DMA? If not and you have it set for DMA it will freeze. You may need to use PIO mode if it is older
Code:
man hdparm
Also do you have the drive or drives on the IDE channel jumpered correctly? Single drive should be jumpered as master. If there's another one on the same IDE ribbon it should be slave.

Drives get auto mounted in you /etc/fstab file. You must be root to edit it. Make a backup copy in case you mess it up.
Code:
man mount
