system freeze at kdm logout: kde 3.5, fglrx 8.21.7, x.org 6.8, kernel 2.6.14
I am having the following issue. I just installed kde 3.5.1 from source. I setup my /ect/inittab so that kdm runs when I switch to init 5.
At first, I had problems getting in to KDE. It turned out that that had to do with permissions issues of the "/tmp/.ICE-unix/" directory, which was (relatively) quickly resolved.
But now I have a entirely separate issue. When ever I startup kdm, us that to log in to any window manager and log out again, my system completely freezes when I should see the kdm login again.
Now I partially figured out where the problem lies. When I edit my "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" to use the vesa driver instead of the fglrx driver, the problem goes away. So clearly, this is an issue with the graphics driver. Another hint at this comes from the "/var/log/kdm.log" file, where I found a following line: "(EE) fglrx(0): CAIL: CAILResetAndInitializeGUI, error 1". So something goes wrong when kdm resets and initializes the GUI.
I can use the vesa driver right now, but needless to say that I am not particularly happy about this since this means no 3D acceleration.
I did an google search on the above error message but got nothing.
graphics card: radeon 9600
driver: fglrx 8.21.7 (most resent)
X : x.org 6.8
I will try to update x.org and the kernel and see what happens.
I any one is experiencing similar problems or has any suggestions, I would really like to hear about it.
