Synchronizing clocks, timezones folly

Hi,

I have a server that reports the correct time when I enter the command 'date'. If I run ntp-client it'll synchronize the date.

If I restart the clock service (/etc/init.d/clock restart) the time will be changed to a future time (6 hours ahead).

I believe the problem lies in the hardware clock, I need to sync it to the software clock.

What is the proper way to do this?

Secondly, the server is set to EST. In /etc:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Jul 4 14:07 localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/EST5EDT

Is there any other references to the timezone? I believe the clock lost synchronization because somewhere there is a wrong timezone listed.

Where are other references to the timezone?

Thanks,

David
