SynCE Problem

I'm trying to setup synce to work with my pocket pc, following the guide on the official site:

synce.sourceforge.net/synce/howto.php

I get to step 4 and type "synce-serial-config ttyUSB0" and get the response " You can now run synce-serial-start to start a serial connection." so far so good.

Then I get to step 5, as my own user, not root, I type "dccm", there is no response, good so far. Then as root, I type "synce-serial-start" and get the response " synce-serial-start is now waiting for your device to connect", I don't know if that is the response I want. But i continue to test the connection by typing, as a user "synce-pstatus" and I get the response "synce-pstatus: Unable to initialize RAPI: An unspecified failure has occurred"

Where did I go wrong? What can I do to fix this? Thanks.

Btw, my log file contained this:

Jul 18 07:41:49 localhost dccm[5757]: Listening for connections on port 5679
Jul 18 07:42:15 localhost synce-serial-start: Executing '/usr/sbin/pppd call synce-device'
Jul 18 07:42:15 localhost pppd[5777]: pppd 2.4.3 started by root, uid 0
Jul 18 07:42:15 localhost pppd[5777]: Device ttyUSB0 is locked by pid 3619
Jul 18 07:42:15 localhost pppd[5777]: Exit.
