Synaptic won't run as "su"?

I can run Synaptic when logged in as root, but not when I do a "super user" in the terminal window when logged in as a normal user. Is this normal? Is this fixable?

in a terminal, type xhost +localhost, then su, password and synaptic, and synaptic will open up for you.

I am having the same issue, running Sarge on the 2.6 kernel with Gnome. When I give in "# xhost +localhost", I get an error from Xlib:
Code:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"
If I just give in "# xhost", I get the same message. Just saying that it might not always work.
