Synaptic problem

Hi,

I'm using RH 8 and I've installed apt and synaptic successfully, but whenever I try to use apt-het update it doesn't work. When I use synaptic, I get the following msg:
could not open RPM package list file /var/state/apt/lists/apt.freshrpms.net_redhat_8.0_en_i386_base_pkglist.os: (no error)

Problem opening /var/state/apt/lists/apt.freshrpms.net_redhat_8.0_en_i386_base_pkglist.os

The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

What does this mean and how do I solve it?

The very last one just snatched from freshrpms.net
But it didn't work with previous versions too.

Yeah, I tried searching Google but that didn't return any results, I'm stuck too. I never got it working, even in bash apt-get doesn't work.
I get something like this:
$ apt-get update
0% [apt server name or IP address]

and that's it, it's stuck, I have to press ctrl-C or ctrl-Z to get out of it.
That and synaptic ... :-/

not sure if this will solve your problem but if your isp requires you to use a proxy server you have to edit /etc/apt/apt.conf and add this to your configuration
Code:
ACQUIRE
{
  http
  {
    Proxy "http://proxy.somewhere.com:3128/";
  };
};
then #apt-get update
run Synaptic

Hope this helps.

did not deeply enough read your first post.

FYI, the command you're using "apt-het update" couldn't work, the right command is "apt-get update"

You mistyped it, that's all.

Uh, I know it's apt-get, that was a typo here. I do type apt-get update, but it was the proxy problem.

So, thanks Ice9 for the solution. I finally get my repositories now.
