If you click on that link in your post which I'm assuming you have set up as a repository in /etc/apt/sources.list, you will find it is an invalid url, it gives me an error also. Correct that entry in your /etc/apt/sources.list to include the proper url.
Probably this one without the actual .tar.bz2 package:
ftp://ftp5.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases

By rights, if you are using Ubuntu it should be:
ftp://ftp5.mplayerhq.hu/ubuntu
If you are using Debian amd64, it should be this one:
ftp://ftp5.mplayerhq.hu/debian-amd64
Go to this page and click on your distribution and copy the address in the url field and paste it in place of that bad one in /etc/apt/sources.list.

Any editing of /etc/apt/sources.list will need to be done as root. You can do this by firing up a terminal session, and su - to root. Then you can use nano, pico, or vi to edit the file to be able to save it.

Because you are using Ubuntu, you can only get root permission with sudo. To edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list with vim, you would issue command:
Code:
sudo vim /etc/apt/sources.list
To learn how to use vim editor, type: vimtutor in a terminal/console and take a quick half hour course. If you want to edit the file with gedit you would issue command:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Any time you need to do something as root/administrator in Ubuntu, you have to put "sudo" at the beginning of your command, then you will be required to enter the administrator password before you gain root privilege.
