Synaptic Error: connection to":0.0" refused by server

Hello All,
I installed Debian with no problems, then xfree86 and windowmaker with apt get still ok.
I then installed synaptic!
When I log in after boot up as root I can run synaptic no problem.
When I log in as my regular user and then su and try to run synaptic
I get the following error message.

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to server
synaptic:could not open display

How do i authorize synaptic to connect to the display when I su.
I generally did not like to run xwindow as root when i RedHat 8 installed.
Any push in the right direction or reference to reading material concerning this
is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
