Synaptic and ./configure questions

OK, first off I'm a newbie to *nix so please talk to me as you would a 5 year old :). I've got 2 questions for ya, hopefully someone can shead a bit of light.

First I'm using a Knoppix HD install and any program that I try to run ./configre on, ends with this:
Code:

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.3) (headers and libraries) not found.
Please check your installation! For more details about this problem,
look at the end of config.log.

I just download the .gz files to my home dir then extract them into a new folder in my home dir. Should I be extracting these someplace else? This QT error happens reguardless of if I su first or not, and this error happens with all of the .gz files that I've downloaded thus far.

My second question which is unrelated to the first is reguarding synaptic. I have successfully installed one or two things with this, but when ever I try something with dependencies wierd stuff happens. Say for example I try to get Kdetoys. When I hit the proceed button, the pop-up says:
Code:

158 packages were kept back and not upgraded
1 new package installed
1 package upgraded
119 packages removed
180mb will be freed after installation

I actually proceeded once installing some other package and ended up messing up my whole KDE and I had to reinstall everything. I mean if I'm installing new stuff shouldn't I be loosing free disk space and not gaining space? I'm wondering if there's a setting that I've overlooked or some step in the procedure that I'm skipping.

Thanks anyone who can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

1) You do not have the QT development headers installed, if you want to add them in then you will need to install the qt3-devel package

Thanks Chris,
I installed libq3-headers without any problems. I rebooted and ./configure still gives the same error (Qt (>= Qt 3.0.3) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation!). Once I install the headers, do I have to initalize it or somehow start it up? I tried to install libqt3-dev, but when I hit the install button it puts the up arrow icon next to the selection for a second, then removes it. And I can't install it. I don't already have it installed.

My problem is that I'm still unfamiliar with how linux handles files, programs etc. Once I install something with synaptic, I have no clue where it got installed. I guess it's time for some good old fashioned diggin around, see if I can figure some of this stuff out.
