Sylpheed / iconv problem

After installing a debian package of version 0.9.6claws I configured an imap4 account. Everything worked fine until I clicked on a message to view it. Instead of the proper code set all I get is a bunch of squares - no alphabetical characters whatsoever. Terminal says:

Sylpheed-WARNING **: iconv cannot convert UTF-7 to US-ASCII

To make things even more confusing: As root I get the same warning, yet I'm able to view my messages.

thanks for helping!
