Switching desktop environments

I've been using xFCE on Slack 8.1 for awhile and I'm going to try out Blackbox and Fluxbox but I realised I haven't the slightest idea how to load X with a different window manager. I read through the man pages for blackbox and startx and made the following .xinitrc file:

xrdb -load $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid gray &
xbiff -geometry -430-+5 &
oclock -geometry -80-0 &
xload -geometry -80-0 &
xterm -geometry +0+60 -ls &
xterm -geometry +0-100 &
xconsole -geometry -0+0 -fn 5x7 &
blackbox

Tried it with exec blackbox too. Can't load X. No specific errors or anything.

Am I missing something?
