svn and unix file permissions

I have been using svn to store some of my work. I have been toying with the idea of putting some of my home directory into a repo after seeing an article on it ( I have only just realised that when I checkout a version it makes a mess of the file permissions, generally this isn't a problem but it does look a mess and causes a few problems with programs that expect certain permissions to be set.

I would like to remember the permissions and owner etc of the files. I have been googling and it seems like like this isn't possible although I did turn up the following post saying that there is a branch of svn that stores meta data, but it is dated 2005. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is still just a branch or not?

I should also mention that I am working only on linux and unix based boxes, no windows and I am the sole user of the repo
