suspending tasks ???

i dont kow if there is a word for it but when i run a program for example

i am not able to do anythin else with that prompt is there a way i can put that program in the background so i can keep working from the promp ?

#./amsn opens a program and after that window is open i dont have much use for the prompt, also if any one knows how i can put a shortcut to the program on my deskop that would be great

you can have a command run in the background by adding & to the end of the line, e.g:
#./amsn &
