I had the same problem.

I ended up having to boot from floppies instead of the cd, but I had a friend who booted from the CD and things went fine. at the boot prompt (I think it's grub that comes up) yu have to type "install=ftp://nameserver/pub/suse/8.2" or where ever the location is of the ftp directory you are trying to get to. You may want to read ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/README.FTP for more information on installing from ftp.

One bug I found with the installation is that I had to have the actual ip numbers in order to install. It wouldn't accept the ftp.whatever.com as an ip. I never wrote down the ip of the server I connected to. I had to look them up at http://eamnesia.com/hostinfo/ipinfo.jsp Thankfully I was installing to a second computer so I could surf on the first one, get the number, enter it in the other one and was off and running.

K

there's no need to go through all this crap of an ftp installation, i would just get SUSE off Bittorent then you wouldn't need to download it everytime you want to install it too.
